Consequences of Brexit in the area of public procurement | Consequences of Brexit in the area of public procurement

The European Parliament has published a paper entitled Consequences of Brexit in the area of Public Procurement. The paper assesses, in comparison with the position under EU membership, the implications of four approaches found in the EU’s relationships with other trading partners. These include the European Economic Area (EEA) Agreement model, and the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Agreement on Government Procurement (GPA) model. Between those two are what the paper calls an EEA-minus approach and a GPA-plus approach. It also notes the procurement-specific issues that may need to be addressed in any withdrawal agreement.

ISO 9001:2015 sets out the criteria for a quality management system and is the only standard in the family that can be certified to (although this is not a requirement). It can be used by any organization, large or small, regardless of its field of activity. This standard is based on a number of quality management principles including a strong customer focus, the motivation and implication of top management, the process approach and continual improvement. Using ISO 9001:2015 helps ensure that customers get consistent, good quality products and services, which in turn brings many business benefits.

Why you should consider working with your competitors | Sometimes working together can be best for all parties, even rivals. What role can procurement play here?

It was 20 years ago when two academics wrote a book heralding a new era of collaboration. Co-opetition pronounced that the old rules of competition were dead. By using business relationships and working with rivals, everyone could win, argued authors Adam Brandenburger and Barry Nalebuff. Supporting their strategic vision, they cited numerous examples of corporations thriving because they had already collaborated with other businesses. They may have been ahead of their time. It’s fair to say that in the intervening 20 years the revolutionary shift did not happen – but now there is growing evidence that Brandenburger and Nalebuff’s ideas are starting to be embraced by businesses. Even the famously secretive Apple announced this year that it would be joining some of its biggest rivals, including Google and Microsoft, to explore the future of artificial intelligence.
