Unlocking BAE Systems' ability to engage suppliers on Carbon Reduction Planning
How Hellios Information gave BAE Systems' suppliers the opportunity to share their primary emissions data and collaborate to achieve Net Zero in their shared supply chain.
Who are BAE Systems?
BAE Systems provides some of the world’s most advanced, technology-led defence, aerospace and security solutions. From developing and manufacturing leading-edge combat vehicles, aircraft and surface ships, to helping keep sensitive data secure from cyber threats, BAE Systems puts technology and innovation right at the heart of their global operations.
Sustainability and mitigating the effects of climate change are fundamental priorities for BAE Systems' business. They believe that collaboration is key. BAE Systems is aiming to reach Net Zero within their own operations by 2030 and are working towards Net Zero across their entire value chain by 2050.
What was their challenge?
BAE Systems have estimated that 20-30% of defence emissions comes from the upstream chains.
In order to work towards Net Zero, BAE Systems wanted to engage their suppliers to measure and subsequently support in the development of decarbonisation plans that underpin the delivery of their products and services to BAE Systems.
How do they navigate beyond Spend Based data?
How do they enable their Suppliers to share their Primary Emissions data?
How do they support suppliers struggling to calculate and provide emissions data?
Introducing JOSCAR Zero
JOSCAR Zero enables BAE Systems to see the emissions attributed to individual participating suppliers.
The data shows the volume of emissions embedded in each site’s operations and output.
Having visibility of total and attributable emissions data directly from the JOSCAR Zero dashboard has saved BAE Systems time and effort in obtaining this information manually from their suppliers.
Through the JOSCAR Zero interface, BAE Systems can start to appreciate the current scope 3 emissions from their supply chain and can see where it may need extra support to meet emissions targets.
How BAE Systems was able to benefit
Simplified reporting of emissions across the value chain
Efficient data driven engagement
Identification of shared strengths and weaknesses with the ability to promote capability building
Amanda Wood, Director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion and Social Sustainability at BAE Systems
“This data visibility allows recommendations to be made on how our suppliers can deliver decarbonisation opportunities and it unlocks the ability for our procurement teams to have meaningful and collaborative engagement with our suppliers on how we can collectively decarbonise our value chain.”
Mark Fisher, Group Senior Sustainable Manager – Supply Chain Environment Stewardship at BAE SystemsK
“Being part of the JOSCAR Zero community allows us to have multiple conversations around key topics. Climate change and sustainability relies on everyone working together and the JOSCAR community is the ideal space to have those discussions.”
