Inside The Buyer's Mind: Your JOSCAR Data Tells Your Story

One of the things I enjoy most about my role is working with other buyers across the JOSCAR community. Although we all have different priorities, we often hear the same questions from suppliers.

How do buyers actually use JOSCAR? What information matters most? What makes a supplier stand out?

This is the first in a series where buyers from across the JOSCAR community will share their perspective on the topics suppliers ask us about most. We all use JOSCAR in slightly different ways, but we share a common goal: helping suppliers understand what buyers are really looking for and how they can get the most value from their profile.

I'd like to start with something I believe sits at the heart of it all.

It's more than a compliance exercise

When people think about JOSCAR, it's easy to see it as another compliance exercise.

From my perspective? It really isn't. One of the things I've learned through working with the JOSCAR community is that suppliers and buyers often look at JOSCAR very differently.

Suppliers understandably focus on completing their profile. Buyers, on the other hand, focus on the decisions that information helps us make. The reality is that your JOSCAR profile has a much longer life than many suppliers realise.

Your profile doesn't stop at approval

One of the biggest misconceptions I come across is that JOSCAR is a one-off approval process. It really isn’t!

Yes, buyers will look at your profile when they're sourcing suppliers. But that's only the start. We use JOSCAR throughout the supplier lifecycle.

At BAE Systems, my procurement teams are using JOSCAR every day because they're managing supplier relationships. I tend to use it a little differently. For me, it's invaluable when I need a quick snapshot of what's happening across our supply chain.

In fact, when customer requirements change because of geopolitical events or changing priorities, having that information already there means we can respond much more quickly. We don't have to go back to every supplier asking the same questions all over again.

Keep telling your story

So, what makes a good supplier profile? Honestly, for me it comes down to two things...

Keep it up to date. Your certifications, policies and information change over time. Make sure your JOSCAR profile changes with them. It gives buyers confidence that we're looking at an accurate picture of your business.

Be honest. Don't feel like every answer has to be a green tick. I'd much rather see an accurate reflection of where your business is today than a profile that tries to look perfect. Buyers use that information to understand where suppliers are now, and that gives us a much better foundation for future conversations.

Why buyers work together

I know JOSCAR can sometimes feel like just another questionnaire. There's a good reason it isn't. The defence industry is incredibly connected. Many buyers work with the same suppliers and face many of the same challenges.

Rather than every organisation asking slightly different questions, we've come together as a community to agree one approach. It saves suppliers time, gives buyers more consistent information and, ultimately, helps us work together as an industry.

Procurement has changed a lot over the years. It's no longer just about buying goods or meeting compliance requirements. It's about building long-term partnerships.

For me, JOSCAR provides the foundation for that.

Sustainability isn't just about compliance

As Social Sustainability Director, this is something I'm particularly passionate about.

Of course, sustainability has a compliance element. It always will. But that's not the bit that excites me. The interesting part is how sustainability can improve business performance, strengthen resilience and ultimately support operational capability. That's where I think we're heading as an industry.

That's also why initiatives like JOSCAR Zero are so important. They give suppliers somewhere to start without feeling overwhelmed.

And whether you're a multinational or a small SME, you can make a difference. Some of the most innovative ideas come from smaller organisations. Sustainability isn't just something for large corporates. Every supplier has a role to play.

Looking beyond compliance

The final thing I'd like suppliers to take away from my perspective is this.

Your JOSCAR profile isn't just data sitting in a platform. It's how buyers start to understand who you are as a business. It gives us confidence in the information we're using, helps us make better decisions and supports stronger supplier relationships.

So invest in it. Keep it up to date. Be honest. And be proud of it.

Because your JOSCAR data really does tell your story. And if you tell that story well, buyers will notice.
