Helping Murray bring evidence-led uniform design to Defence with JOSCAR
A recognised supplier profile and new connections are helping Murray establish its presence in the Defence community.
Who are Murray?
Murray designs and delivers uniforms for large UK organisations, supporting customers from initial design through to nationwide rollout. Based in Coventry, the company has been producing clothing for over 50 years.
At the heart of its approach is the Science of Uniform®, an evidence-led design methodology developed through research with Coventry University. Drawing on a study of more than 2,500 employees, its 240-plus-point framework explores how uniform affects the way people feel and perform at work.
Each programme begins with wearer research and trials, helping Murray develop clothing around the needs of the people wearing it and the organisations they represent.
What was their challenge?
Murray wanted to explore opportunities in Defence, where it had identified challenges around uniform availability and support for new starters.
Murray already held ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications, an EcoVadis Silver rating and Sedex membership. However, without an established Defence track record, it needed to make that information accessible within an assurance framework familiar to Defence Buyers.
To begin those conversations, it first needed to build visibility and confidence in an unfamiliar market.
A recognised starting point for supplier assurance
Murray joined JOSCAR in 2025, bringing its policies, processes and credentials together in a single supplier profile that participating Defence Buyers could access.
Gareth Bass, Murray’s Channel Director for Defence, led the registration process, gathering information from across the business. Although many of the required policies were already in place, the process helped the team identify areas to strengthen as it prepared to supply the sector.
Registration also provided the catalyst for Murray to achieve Cyber Essentials certification and strengthen its approach to IT security.
Building connections across the Defence community
Joining JOSCAR also created opportunities for Murray to meet people across the sector.
Gareth attended JOSCAR Live, where he connected with representatives from major Defence organisations and networked with fellow suppliers.
For a business entering a new market, these conversations offered a valuable opportunity to introduce its capabilities, better understand customer requirements and explore how the Science of Uniform® could apply within Defence.
With its assurance information in place, Murray is better positioned to demonstrate its credentials, build relationships and explore how its expertise could support Defence customers as it develops its presence in the sector.
"JOSCAR gave us a credible, recognised way into a sector we knew we could genuinely add value to. It's early days for us, but it's already opened conversations with some of the biggest companies in Defence. It's also sharpened how we think about applying the Science of Uniform approach to a very different sector.”
